The Borobudur Temple

Borobudur Temple is one of the most iconic and significant Buddhist temples in the world. Borobudur Temple's History

The temple was abandoned in the 14th century after the Sailendra Dynasty fell, and it was later covered by volcanic ash and overgrown by jungle vegetation. The temple was rediscovered in the nineteenth century by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the British Governor of Java, who ordered its repair.

 


Borobudur Temple Architecture

The temple's building is an engineering and design marvel. The temple is built in the shape of a pyramid, with six square platforms at the base and three circular platforms at the summit. The total structure stands over 40 meters tall and spans over 15,000 square meters.

The walls of the temple are embellished with beautiful carvings depicting Buddha's life and teachings. The sculptures also depict scenes from Jataka tales, which tell of the Buddha's prior lives before achieving enlightenment.


The large stupa at the temple's peak is encircled by 72 lesser stupas, each carrying a Buddha figure. The central stupa is thought to represent enlightenment, while the smaller stupas are thought to represent the route to enlightenment.
